Vignobles Berthier Coteaux du Giennois

$26.00

Vintage: 2021

Grapes: 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Gamay

Region: Loire Valley, France

Appellation: Coteaux de Giennois

Soil: Limestone, Clay

Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation in vats

Aging: 1 year in barrels

Farming: Certified organic

This is a wine that stands up to red Burgundies at double its price. The soils in the little known Coteaux de Giennois appellation are quite similar to those in Chablis, which is located about 50 miles to the east.

Giennois sits just north of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé on the Loire River. The Berthier brothers, Clement and Florian, farm their vines organically with healthy cover crops. Fermentation takes place in vats (15-20 days). The must is pumped over daily to extract the best of its coloring and tannins. The wine is then racked and aged for 1 year in barrels.

This wine will satisfy pinot noir lovers, but it also has a bit of Gamay blended in which is called Passetoutgrain in Burgundy. The Gamay softens the edges just a bit and gives the wine some freshness. It’s good.
